Disney Updates Country Bear Jamboree, Replaces Controversial Character Name

Disney has renamed a long-standing character from the Country Bear Jamboree attraction, replacing “Liver Lips McGrowl” with “Romeo McGrowl” to promote inclusivity and respect. In a move to align with contemporary values and create a more inclusive environment, Disney has changed the name of one of its long-standing characters. After 50 years, “Liver Lips McGrowl,” a character from the Country Bear Jamboree attraction at Disney World, has been replaced with “Romeo McGrowl.” The decision follows a seven-month refurbishment of the attraction.

The Country Bear Jamboree, which opened in 1971, features a troupe of 18 bears performing old country songs. According to the Disney Inside the Magic blog, the name “Liver Lips McGrowl” was considered offensive and derogatory, particularly towards individuals struggling with alcoholism. The term “liver lips” is associated with excessive alcohol consumption and liver damage, making it an outdated and insensitive phrase.

Disney’s decision to retire the name and introduce Romeo McGrowl is part of the company’s broader efforts to rectify culturally insensitive elements within its attractions. Although the appearance of the bear remains largely unchanged, the name alteration signifies Disney’s commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive environment for its guests.

This initiative is not an isolated case. Disney has been proactive in updating various attractions to reflect modern values. Notable examples include the reimagining of Splash Mountain and the Jungle Cruise. These attractions underwent significant modifications to remove stereotypical and offensive portrayals of indigenous peoples and animals.

Disney’s statement on the change emphasized their growing awareness and dedication to adapting their offerings to align with contemporary societal expectations. By removing outdated and insensitive elements, Disney aims to create a welcoming environment for all guests.

The update to the Country Bear Jamboree and similar initiatives reflect Disney’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and respect, ensuring that their attractions can be enjoyed by a diverse audience without perpetuating harmful stereotypes or insensitive portrayals.
