Nearly three decades after Tupac Shakur’s untimely death, startling new claims have emerged from none other than Marion “Suge” Knight, the former Death Row Records CEO who was with the rapper the night he was gunned down in Las Vegas.
In a recent phone interview with People, Knight shed light on previously unknown details—not just about the 1996 shooting, but also the unconventional way Tupac’s friends honored his memory.
Tupac’s Ashes Smoked in Blunt by Friends, Says Suge Knight
Knight claims that after Tupac was cremated, his ashes were passed around and smoked in a blunt by close friends of the rapper in what he described as a symbolic ritual.
“A bag with his ashes was passed around,” Knight told People.
“His homies rolled him up. They smoked him. You gotta understand, that’s what made sense. It was symbolic. It’s like… you keep part of him.”
Although Suge witnessed the tribute, he says he did not partake due to being on probation at the time.
“I told his mother, ‘Moms, I’d love to, but if I hit that, I’ll get in trouble. I was probably the only one who didn’t hit him,” he recalled.
Revisiting the Night of the Shooting
Knight also shared a harrowing account of the night Tupac was shot while riding in a black BMW with him near the Las Vegas Strip. According to Knight, he was trying to explain the unfolding situation to police despite bleeding from injuries sustained during the shooting.
“I got out and tried to tell the officers what happened while I was bleeding everywhere,” he said.
“I then was getting Tupac out the car, even when the door was open. I had to go over there bleeding everywhere, take the seat belt off him.”
Tupac was shot multiple times on September 7, 1996, and died six days later at the age of 25.
Murder Trial of Suspect Delayed Again
These revelations arrive as the long-awaited trial of Duane “Keefe D” Davis, who was arrested in 2023 in connection with Tupac’s murder, has been delayed until November 2025.
Prosecutors allege Davis orchestrated the drive-by shooting that killed Shakur, while his legal team continues to fight the charges. The trial has drawn renewed interest from fans and media, further fueled by Knight’s resurfaced recollections.
Tupac’s Legacy Lives On—In Life and Death
Tupac Shakur remains one of the most revered and iconic figures in hip-hop history. From posthumous albums to academic courses dissecting his lyrics, the artist’s influence shows no signs of fading.
Whether viewed as a bizarre anecdote or an intimate tribute, Suge Knight’s story about Tupac’s ashes is yet another layer in the ever-evolving mythology of the rapper’s life, death, and legacy.
