Pharrell Williams is setting the tone for what he calls a “beautiful” and powerful 2025 Met Gala, as he prepares to co-chair the iconic fashion event with a star-studded team. Scheduled for May 5 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, this year’s gala will spotlight the theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
Speaking on Vogue’s podcast, The Run-Through, Williams — who also serves as the men’s creative director at Louis Vuitton — emphasized that the night will be a deep celebration of Black identity, style, and culture.
“It’s going to be a very impactful, beautiful night where we celebrate the color Black,” said Williams in the April 29 episode. “We celebrate the things that come from that color. We celebrate the mentality. We celebrate the plight. We celebrate the progress and the success. And we celebrate the potential.”
A Historic Theme Rooted in Culture
The 2025 theme draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s acclaimed book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The work explores how Black individuals have historically used fashion as both a creative outlet and a statement of cultural identity, resistance, and pride.
Williams elaborated on how the gala will highlight excellence in many forms.
“We see it in all different forms, right? From authors to architects to artists to academics and to athletes, all A words,” he noted. “That’s what that night is all about. It’s like the best of the best, top of the top.”
