Beyond being a great pillar of strength on the Nedbank boards in recent years, Errol will also be remembered for his exceptional stewardship of the South African banking sector during the Global Financial Crisis of 2008. His legacy will continue to inspire us, and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”
Kruger joined the Nedbank boards on 1 August 2016, bringing with him decades of distinguished experience in banking regulation and financial supervision.
Before his time at Nedbank, Kruger served as the Registrar of Banks at the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) from September 2003 to July 2011. In this pivotal role, he was instrumental in guiding South Africa’s banking sector through the turbulent period of the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, championing the early adoption of the Basel II framework and the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision.
Between 2009 and 2011, he also represented South Africa on the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, solidifying his status as a leading voice in international banking regulation.
After leaving SARB, Kruger continued his influential career globally, serving as Managing Director of Supervision and Authorisation at the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority beginning 1 August 2011. There, he was appointed to Qatar’s Financial Stability and Risk Control Committee, further contributing to global financial stability efforts.
Returning to South Africa, Kruger joined the Nedbank boards where he remained a key advisor and visionary leader. His other notable roles included serving as a non-executive director of Capital Appreciation and Chairperson of Nedbank Private Wealth in the Isle of Man.
Kruger was celebrated not only for his professional expertise but also for his compassionate leadership and commitment to integrity, traits that left an indelible mark on colleagues and the broader banking industry.
