New Orleans rap icon and entrepreneur Master P, born Percy Miller, has been named President of Basketball Operations at the University of New Orleans (UNO). The appointment, announced on February 26, 2025, marks a major move to rejuvenate the struggling Privateers basketball program, blending Miller’s basketball knowledge, business savvy, and community leadership.
A Full-Circle Moment for Master P
A New Orleans native, Master P grew up in the Calliope Projects, where basketball played a pivotal role in shaping his life. Reflecting on his childhood, he stated:
“As a kid growing up in New Orleans, I can honestly say that basketball changed and saved my life. At that time, UNO was one of the best programs in the country. It was all about Privateer Nation, and there was so much excitement on the Lakefront.”

Miller’s deep-rooted connection to UNO stems from his passion for the game and his early memories of watching legends like coach Tim Floyd, Ledell Eackles, and Tony Harris in the 1980s. His mission now is to restore the program to its former glory.
Blending Business and Basketball for Success
Master P’s basketball resume extends beyond UNO. In the late 1990s, he played in the NBA preseason with the Toronto Raptors, proving his skills at the highest level. His son, Romeo Miller (Lil’ Romeo), also played college basketball at USC alongside future NBA star DeMar DeRozan.
Beyond the court, Master P has spent decades mentoring young athletes through his Game of Life programs, which provide basketball training, life skills, and leadership development to inner-city youth.
UNO head men’s basketball coach Stacy Hollowell expressed excitement about Miller’s appointment:
“I am thrilled to add Coach Percy Miller to our staff as President of Basketball Operations. Coach Miller cares deeply about his city, the University of New Orleans, and Privateers basketball.”
A Vision for Student-Athlete Success
Master P’s influence goes beyond wins and losses. His vision for the program includes:
- Providing mentorship and leadership training
- Ensuring student-athletes have educational opportunities
- Strengthening community engagement
- Attracting top-tier talent to rebuild the team
“It’s about educating and creating future leaders at the same time. I’m here to make sure these young student-athletes have the opportunities, resources, and mentorship to succeed on and off the court.”
The Road to Revival for Privateers Basketball
With a current record of 4-25, UNO’s basketball program is in dire need of a turnaround. Master P’s appointment signals a bold new direction, combining sports, education, and community empowerment to build a winning culture.
His leadership is expected to reignite interest in UNO basketball, attract high-caliber recruits, and position the Privateers as a competitive force once again.
