Benni McCarthy, the legendary South African footballer, has officially been named the new head coach of the Kenya national team, the Harambee Stars. The appointment comes after weeks of speculation linking him to multiple coaching vacancies, particularly in Major League Soccer (MLS). However, McCarthy ultimately chose Kenya over other international opportunities, citing the nation’s untapped potential and his belief in the project presented to him.
Why McCarthy Chose Kenya Over MLS
In an interview with FKF TV, McCarthy disclosed that he received offers from several MLS clubs but found Kenya’s football ambitions more compelling.
“I wouldn’t say I was in high demand, but I did have a few job interviews, mostly with MLS clubs,” McCarthy stated. “However, I see Kenya as a sleeping giant in football. They have immense potential, and their players are already making an impact in Europe and beyond.”
McCarthy emphasized that his decision was also influenced by the warm reception he received from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
“When I spoke to FKF deputy president McDonald Mariga and my agent, they made it clear that the federation was very interested in me. It’s always great when people appreciate what you bring to the table and believe in your vision,” he added.
The respect and admiration shown by FKF president Hussein Mohammed and his team played a pivotal role in McCarthy’s decision.
“They saw my story—coming from Africa, breaking barriers in Europe at a young age, and excelling under challenging conditions—as something Kenyan players could draw inspiration from,” McCarthy noted.
A New Challenge for McCarthy
McCarthy’s appointment as Kenya’s head coach marks a significant step in his coaching career. While many expected him to pursue a prominent role in Europe following his successful tenure as an assistant coach at Manchester United, he chose to take on a different challenge.
His time at Manchester United from 2022 to 2024 saw him play a crucial role in the development of attacking players, particularly Marcus Rashford. Under McCarthy’s guidance, Rashford enjoyed his best-ever season, scoring 30 goals across all competitions.
Reflecting on his work with Rashford, McCarthy told SuperSport TV:
“Rashy is a special player and a great human being. At United, I was always direct with him. Instead of sweet-talking him, I told him what he needed to hear, not what he wanted to hear. I think that approach helped him unlock his full potential.”
Coaching Experience and Future Ambitions
McCarthy brings valuable experience to the Harambee Stars, having previously managed Cape Town City and AmaZulu FC in South Africa’s top-flight league. Now, as head coach of Kenya’s national team, he faces the task of rebuilding and strengthening the squad to compete at a higher level on the international stage.
His appointment has sparked excitement among Kenyan football fans, who hope McCarthy’s leadership will steer the team to new heights. With his expertise, experience, and winning mentality, Kenya could soon become a major force in African football.
Looking Ahead
With McCarthy at the helm, Kenya’s national team embarks on a new era filled with promise. His decision to reject MLS opportunities in favor of this role underscores his commitment to making a meaningful impact in African football.
Kenyan football enthusiasts and players alike are eager to see how McCarthy’s strategies will shape the team’s future. His tenure as Harambee Stars coach will undoubtedly be closely watched as he aims to bring his trademark discipline, tactical acumen, and motivation to the squad.
