Issa Rae Shuts Down Possibility of ‘Insecure’ Reboot

Issa Rae has officially confirmed that her hit show Insecure will not be making a comeback. Despite its massive success, Rae is firmly saying no to any reboot of the beloved series, which aired from 2016 to 2021.

Rae shared her thoughts during a recent appearance on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, hosted by Carmelo Anthony and The Kid Mero. In the conversation, Rae explained that Insecure holds a special place in her heart, making it difficult to consider returning to it. “No, because it’s so personal to me,” she said. Rae compared her connection to Insecure to Larry David’s commitment to Curb Your Enthusiasm, where he holds creative control because it’s based on his personal experiences.

She elaborated further, saying, “Nobody else can do Curb Your Enthusiasm ‘cause that’s his thing and his complaints. So, I would almost feel like, ‘The f—k?’ It would feel like the AI voice of Beyoncé—no, that’s my stuff, and those were my experiences.” Rae made it clear she would be open to creating something new but has zero interest in reviving Insecure.

The show, known for its raw and authentic portrayal of Black millennial life, received critical acclaim throughout its run. It earned multiple Emmy nominations and secured Issa Rae a Peabody Trailblazer Award. Insecure became a fan favourite for its witty dialogue, relatable characters, and portrayal of the ups and downs of life, love, and career for Black women in America.

The cast, including Yvonne Orji as Molly, Jay Ellis as Lawrence, and many others, won over audiences with performances that helped the show stand out from other comedies. Rae’s firm stance against a reboot reflects how deeply personal Insecure was, as it was a reflection of her experiences and creative vision.

While fans may be disappointed to hear there won’t be another season, Rae’s dedication to creating new, original work offers hope that she’ll bring fresh stories to the screen in the future.
