Melvyn Jaminet, a prominent French rugby player, has been suspended for 34 weeks and fined 30,000 euros after making racist comments in a video. The French Rugby Federation (FFR) announced the disciplinary action following an internal investigation. In a significant disciplinary action, the French Rugby Federation (FFR) has suspended Melvyn Jaminet, a 25-year-old fullback for the French national rugby team, for 34 weeks following a racist video he posted online. The suspension, which affects all competitions, was decided after a meeting of the FFR Disciplinary Board. The federation deemed that Jaminet’s actions had “harmed the higher interests of rugby.” In addition to the suspension, Jaminet has been fined 30,000 euros.

The video in question, recorded after France’s victory over Argentina on July 6, featured Jaminet making offensive comments. “I promise, the first Arab I see on the road, I’ll headbutt him,” Jaminet was heard saying in an Instagram story that was subsequently deleted. The remarks quickly drew widespread condemnation, and the FFR labeled them “totally unacceptable,” initiating an internal investigation and removing Jaminet from the team during their tour of Argentina.

The FFR’s statement noted that 8 weeks of the 34-week suspension could be substituted with community service activities beneficial to the FFR. These activities might include prevention programs focusing on the dangers of alcohol and social networks, as well as initiatives promoting the values of sport and combating discrimination.

Following the incident, Jaminet also faced disciplinary proceedings from his club, Toulon. On Tuesday, he met with the club’s management to discuss the repercussions of his actions. The club announced that it would make its decision regarding Jaminet’s future “in the next few days.”

In addition to the FFR’s disciplinary measures, the Paris prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the incident for “death threats due to origin” after receiving a complaint from the anti-racism organization SOS Racisme.

Jaminet’s suspension and the accompanying fine underscore the seriousness with which the FFR and the broader rugby community are addressing issues of racism and discrimination. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of promoting respect and inclusivity within sports and society at large.
