In a bid to enhance travel between South Africa and China, the China Centre of Culture and Tourism in Mauritius recently hosted a Winter Tourism Promotional Seminar at the Sandton Southern Sun Hotel. The event, held on February 26, 2025, and supported by the Chinese Embassy in South Africa, showcased China’s rich cultural heritage and its captivating winter tourism attractions, particularly in Jilin and Fujian provinces.
Attended by South African tour operators, travel agents, tourism boards, and other key stakeholders, the seminar served as a platform to promote tourism exchange and business collaborations between the two nations.
A Call to Explore China’s Winter Wonderland
The seminar highlighted China’s world-class winter tourism offerings, with a special focus on Jilin’s breathtaking snowy landscapes and Fujian’s unique attractions. Ms. Fan Min, Director of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Jilin Province, described the province’s charm, inviting South Africans to “have a majestic winter encounter.”
“Tourism serves as a bridge for spreading civilization and strengthening friendships,” said Mrs. Han, Councillor of Culture and Tourism at the Chinese Embassy in South Africa. “China sincerely welcomes South African tourists.”
Relaxed Visa Policies and Travel Convenience
A major highlight of the seminar was China’s relaxed visa policies, which have made travel easier for South Africans. Mr. Yang Jun, Director of the China Centre of Culture and Tourism in Mauritius, emphasized the simplified visa process, including visa-free transit for certain travelers and reduced visa fees.
South Africans can now enjoy more direct travel options, with flights from Johannesburg to Shenzhen and Hong Kong via Air China and Cathay Pacific. From these hubs, visitors have access to China’s extensive high-speed train network, highways, and domestic flights, making it easier than ever to explore the country’s diverse attractions.
High-Profile Speakers and Industry Collaboration
The event featured live performances and keynote addresses from industry leaders and dignitaries. Notable speakers included Sir Stuart Ntlathi, South African BRICS Ambassador, and Mr. Didier Bayeye-Mbombo, African Tourism Ambassador.
Ms. Olga Molebale, Director at Tlou Dunes Tourism Consulting, shared her experiences from a recent trip to China, praising the warmth of the people and the diversity of attractions. “The hospitality is unmatched, and the variety of experiences, from historical sites to modern cityscapes, makes China a must-visit destination,” she said.
Strengthening Ties Through Tourism
Beyond promoting tourism, the seminar fostered collaboration between South African and Chinese travel professionals. The discussions focused on expanding tour packages, enhancing travel experiences, and creating opportunities for joint ventures between tourism businesses in both countries.
As both nations continue to strengthen diplomatic and cultural relations, tourism remains a key pillar of this partnership. With easier travel access, breathtaking destinations, and deeper cultural exchanges, the seminar set the stage for a new era of tourism collaboration.
Looking Ahead
With the groundwork laid for increased tourism between China and South Africa, travel enthusiasts and industry professionals alike are eager to see how these initiatives unfold. Whether it’s skiing in Jilin, exploring the Great Wall, or immersing in China’s vibrant cultural festivals, South African travelers now have more reasons than ever to add China to their bucket lists.
